Type 1 Diabetes

An Autoimmune Condition — Present for Life

In Type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The body produces little to no insulin, making external insulin therapy essential for survival.

It most commonly develops in children and young adults, though it can occur at any age. Unlike Type 2, it is not caused by lifestyle factors.

Type 2 Diabetes

The Most Common Type — and the Most Reversible

In Type 2, the body still produces insulin but cells become resistant to its effects. Over time, the pancreas can’t keep up with demand, causing blood sugar to rise. It accounts for 90–95% of all diabetes cases worldwide.

Prediabetes

The Warning Stage — Fully Reversible

Prediabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as Type 2 diabetes. It’s a critical warning window — without intervention, most cases progress to Type 2 within 5 years.

Gestational Diabetes

Diabetes That Develops During Pregnancy

Gestational diabetes (GDM) occurs when pregnancy hormones interfere with the body’s ability to use insulin effectively. It develops in the second or third trimester and typically resolves after birth — but it raises future risk significantly.

Women who have had GDM have a 40–60% chance of developing Type 2 diabetes within 5–10 years. Early lifestyle intervention can cut that risk substantially.

When it occurs
